This project, located in a prestigious condominium along the High Line in New York City, involved the design and engineering of a prefabricated metal stair structure connecting the lobby to the rooftop garden. The staircase serves as a sculptural centerpiece and was developed with a high level of precision and attention to detail, both structurally and architecturally.
The entire metal structure was fabricated in Italy and preassembled in the workshop to verify dimensional accuracy and overall fit prior to shipment. The metal treads—designed as recessed trays—were anchored both to the central spiral stringer and to the surrounding cast-in-place concrete walls of the stairwell. The supporting structure for the metal handrail was also included in the scope and was fully coordinated with the stair geometry.
Given the highly visible and prestigious nature of the project, tolerances were exceptionally tight. Coordination with the timber supplier was critical to ensure full alignment between trades and to guarantee a seamless interface between the metal structure and the wood finishes. The preassembly phase played a fundamental role in confirming that all components were present, correctly fabricated, and met the required tolerances before shipping and final installation on site.
